Welcome

Welcome to the first of many articles written for Great Diversions blog. I started this site in order to share with my friends, family, and soon-to-be-friends the highlights and lowlights as I undergo my training in the Foreign Service of the U. S. Department of State. Getting to this point in my life has been a development years in the making and if I can make it half as interesting to my readers as I expect it to be for me, then you have found a place on the web to kick back, learn, and day dream.

Of course, that all said, I did choose to name the site Great Diversions and I reserve the right to spout off about a few time-wasters of my own. So in addition to discussing the Foreign Service lifestyle and travel in general, I hope you’ll forgive me if I waste a little bandwidth on classic films, high literature, and pop culture. After all, I can only write so many stories about processing visas for foreigners and living in countries with frequent blackouts before you’ll be begging me for some random movie trivia. Not to mention the State Department actually frowns on its employees blogging in too much detail about work (what, with all the nuclear secrets and all.)

Oh, and if you have no idea what I’m talking about with all of this Foreign Service talk then you probably ended up at this blog due to some sort of computer error, but, have no fear, I’ll explain it all in a later post. If you can’t wait that long then read more about it at the State Department website or head over to Editfish’s blog and read about it from the perspective someone in the middle of the hiring process.

Thanks for reading.

Hey Shawn,

Congrats on making it into the Foreign Service. Look forward to seeing your experiences and observations. Good luck!

Thanks, FSO.

I’ve really enjoyed following your site. I’m sure we’ll cross paths someday.

Shawn

Congrats Shawn!… and gee…thanks for telling me sooner (grumble, grumble, fed bastard…grumble).

Hopefully one day you can be stationed in Japan, where I can harass you and you can have me dragged away by large burly men in black. We both knew it would come to that someday anyway.

Kris

I was hoping someone would blog about their experience in the May 2006 A-100 class. Thanks for doing this. I’m #58 out of 60 on the management career track, though if I pass my Chinese language test on June 19 I can move up to #9. Hopefully I can get a call for the January class, which would fit nicely with my B-school graduation this fall.

Best wishes, and may your Flag Day be all you hope for.

Congrats, Shawn! Jennifer told me about your blog, and I’m definitely adding it to my Bloglines list! I can’t wait to hear where you end up going!

I got a letter from Jennifer the other week, and I tried to respond, but it was sent back to me. If you have time, could you e-mail me your current mailing address?
