It’s funny how you can get caught up with the funny stories of people you don’t even really know. There has long been a story floating around in the FS blog world started by Dakota of Face the Sun about his claims of once seeing a monkey riding a weiner dog. It was, of course, met with derision and and disbelief by everyone else because although Dakota claimed to have a photograph of this unnatural alliance, he was slow to produce it. After months of waiting the photo was produced and crow was eaten. Now, Phil from Life on the Mekong has the unfortunate conclusion to the story.

According to Business Week, the Foreign Service is the 6th best place to launch a career for new graduates. The article focuses on the training that new consular officers receive, which isn’t what everyone goes on to to, but the majority do so it makes sense. You can read the article here.
I joined the Foreign Service on May 1, 2006. There’s a new class starting on September 18 and our class is the welcoming committee. Just like that, I’m a veteran diplomat. Why didn’t anyone tell me this would be so easy?
I have to admit that lately I’ve been obsessed with tracking every little detail of my blog since I joined Google Analytics. As we all know, Google knows all and through this program they’ve decided to share a little of their knowledge. I can now track not only how many unique hits and page views I receive on a daily basis, but also where exactly on the page people click, what keywords are entered into a search engine that lead to my site, what links people click on to leave the site, and all sorts of other technical stuff that I don’t understand. Today I noticed what I consider my most fascinating find.
I don’t know whether it is the new job working for Big Brother, living in D.C., or the general excitement about the chance the Democrats might actually take charge of some portion of the government and create at least the semblence of checks and balances in the government, but I’m pretty pumped about the upcoming elections.
This evening I took a walk down to Olsson’s Books, a DC area bookstore chain, to attend a discussion with John Brady Kiesling who was in town to promote his new book, “Diplomacy Lessons: Realism for an Unloved Superpower.”
I’ve been a little more active on the computer lately. It’s probably because at the moment I’m only doing half day Russian classes and we’re at the very basic phase right now. As that picks up I’ll be much busier. (More on Russian in a later post.) While I have the time I’ve decided to do a bit more with the blog.
I don’t know how many of you have watched the NBC Nightly News the last few nights, but they’ve had an interesting investigative report that falls right into my recent acquisitions training at work. The U.S. Army has provided pretty much a textbook example of what suspicious acquisitions practice looks like.
Steve “The Crocodile Hunter” Irwin has been killed in a freak accident while snorkling off the coast of Australia. Irwin was gathering some footage for a new children’s television show that he was making along with his daughter when he swam over a hidden stingray that lashed out and pierced his chest with its barbed sting. Irwin was 44 years old.
