Hitting the Wall

I suppose I should consider myself fortunate that it has taken this long, but I feel that I have finally run head-first into the language training wall. I’d been warned that it would happen and witnessed the unpleasant experience first-hand about a month ago when it happened to my wife. Now it is my turn to feel like a no-progress-making, non-Russian-speaking idiot.

Prior to the holiday break I was already starting to feel that I was stagnating. Although I continue to improve in the vocabulary and grammar that I already know, none of the new stuff seems to be sticking. I keep falling back on the same old verbs and adjectives instead of using the shiny new words I should be utilizing. Throw in a week long break for the holidays where I barely even thought about Russian, let alone used it, and it made for a very difficult time last week trying to get back in the swing of things.

This week starts a new rotation in language training. I’ll receive two new teachers, one for reading and one for conversation. As much as I liked my previous two teachers, I am hoping this change will help spark a re-focus in my studies. My next, and final progress test before the real deal will be at the beginning of February and I can’t afford to lose much more time banging my head against this wall.

Blog Notes: I’m not sure whether to be amused or offended that my nifty stat tracker lets me know that a few times a month people seem to find their way to my blog by doing a search for “pointless sights.”

Hang in there. The whole month of December sucked for me big time in Polish. Same thing, learning new things, nothing sticking and at the same time losing what I’d learned before. It WILL pass. Hang in there!!

I started my first week of Spanish last week. I’ve already requested to be assigned to another teacher because me and this one seem to have a “personality conflict”. Is that the correct euphamisim for “I think she sucks”?

Tell me it gets better. Please.

From what I’ve been able to gather, every section seems to be totally different. I haven’t really heard of many in the Russian section changing language teachers due to “personality conflicts”, but I’ve heard that from several people in the Spanish section. Russian may be a bit more uniform in its teaching and style, perhaps?

It will get better.

Maybe.

Good luck.
