I see you’ve got the Katzner dictionary ubiquitous to every Russian student’s library
I leave for Peace Corps Ukraine at the end of the month and have been trying to soak up as much Russian as possible before I leave. I have Katzner, but I went with the Slavica 5000 Russian Words and Lusin’s Master the Basics Russian as opposed to the other references you have pictured. I’m still definitely a beginner, but there are a lot of aspects about Russian I like. Hopefully I’ll continue to feel that way in Ukraine…

Thanks for all of the pictures.
I’ve studied Russian since freshman year of college (now I’m a senior), and I adore my Katzner. Another really, really good reference book you might think about looking at is Derek Offord’s Using Russian. It’s pretty damn amazing!Oh, and just to let you know, Жизнь is feminine.
One of my old freshman professors said that if a noun is ‘abstract’ and ends in a soft sign, it’s always feminine. -
Hi Shawn,
I’ve been looking into foreign service jobs lately and just came accross your blog. As it turns out, my interest in working overseas stems from my experiences in Ukraine, so its nice to hear that you are headed there soon. Kiev is a lovely city, or at least some parts of it are
I’d certainly love to continue hearing about your work there. If somehow I end up in Ukraine sometime soon maybe I can look you up.One particularly nice part of living in Kiev, if no one has told you yet, is that every car is potentially a taxi. All you have to do is hold your arm out and someone will stop to offer you a ride. You’ll have to figure out on your own what reasonable rates are and negotiate with the driver. My american friend I met in Kiev said he felt perfectly comfortable letting his wife travel this way late at night from any part of the city, just in case you are worried at all about safety.

I hate trying to type in Russian as well! I have a picture of a keyboard w/ the cyrillic on it in my pics folder. When I need to type, I make the picture really big, and the place I’m typing really small, so that I can see the letters. Also very efficient, lol. I might have to try the mashing technique!
