    I wish I were missing a bit more of the campaign rhetoric. Having been overseas for the elections with the hanging chads, etc. there’s a mixture of bliss and frustration at not truly understanding the issues or, conversely, understanding them perfectly and wondering why folks are so worked up over them. Foreign Service Officers are always on display as representing the American public, so I can understand the thought behind barring attendance. Understand, but completely disagree. As voting americans, officers have the right to hear candidates speak if they are able. I think a less black/white line could have been drawn here to turn the event into an example of democracy, which as it stands, it was not.

    I think it was a political move on Obama’s part and nothing more. Therefore barring government representatives from attending makes a lot of sense to me. If any Berlin based diplomat was interested in hearing the speech they could certainly do so via the web, without their presence being misconstrued as support for Obama.

    Well, certainly it was a political move. The guy’s running for president. I don’t think he made any pretense that he was just visiting Berlin as a sitting U.S. Senator.

    You are right though, there are plenty of other ways the diplomats could hear or read his speech even though they weren’t allowed to attend. I think part of the controversy has to do with the fact McCain also did a speech recently in Canada and not only were FSOs allowed to attend, the Ambassador was there.
