Olympic fever! You can catch it anywhere this year. On television, in print, even online with streaming video. Well, there are a few restrictions to watching it online.
NBC is showing quite a bit of the Olympics online, but we can’t watch it here because their live coverage is restricted to those in the United States. That’s stupid, I think, but hey…they make the rules. Eurosport and BBC are also showing the events live online for those living in Europe. Hey! I live in Europe! Actually, no. No, I don’t as these websites are kind enough to tell me when I try to use them. “You live in Ukraine,” they say. “We’re not sure where that is, but it sure as hell ain’t in Europe.”
Of course, I also just went over to Yahoo to check out the medal standings for Ukraine and found out that Yahoo is also a little iffy on geography. According to Yahoo, the largest city in Ukraine is Lvov. First of all, that is the Russian spelling of the city. Second of all, Lviv is the 7th largest city in Ukraine with Kyiv having a few million more people.
By the way, as I write this Ukraine has claimed four bronze medals: wrestling, judo, weightlighting, and sychronized diving.

Hi,
This isn’t entirely relevant to this particular post, but I am new to blogs (yes, I’m behind the times…and I’m 24…!). I was wondering about your impressions of racism in Kyiv… I’m in the process of applying for a Fulbright grant to study there, and my now-fiance (by then will be husband) will be coming with me if I go. He’s Hispanic and looks more Middle Eastern. I lived in St. Petersburg for a year and the attacks and attitudes toward minorities were extremely frightening. I’m worried it might be a problem in Ukraine as well. My worry isn’t helped by the fact that most of my (albeit very elderly) Ukrainian relatives are quite racist. I’ve found scattered reports about the issues, but would really appreciate your observations.
Many thanks!
