It’s been a weird holiday season for me so far. Between learning the Russian definition of “party” first-hand and seeing American consumerism at its best, I think I’ll just be glad when the holidays are over.

Yesterday was the annual Yolka Party in the Russian section at FSI. About 3 weeks ago, the Russian students were called together and told about the party and the fact that we were all expected to participate. And that it was going to be the most fun we’d ever had in our lives. “Or else” seemed to be implied in that last statement. (Seriously, I was a little frightened.)

My class had already been preparing a poem in anticipation of the event, so I was set. Shawn, however, was forced to join the choir along with the other students that didn’t want to make a toast or perfom a pre-written skit. So as we left that meeting, all seemed well; it would be a party, it would maybe be a little fun…even though we were told all speaking at the party would be in Russian, so I knew I had no chance of knowing what was going on most of the time.

Then the rehearsals began. Many, many rehearsals. Apparently when Russians say “party,” they really mean “recital.” Not my idea of a super-fun time. But after 3 weeks of frustration, we all survived the event yesterday. It was okay….it wasn’t exactly fun, but I suppose it could have been worse. At least there was food after we all finished performing. And it did mark the end of Russian classes until January 2nd!

And in the other half of my life….customers have been absolutely crazy at the store. “Yes, sir, we’ve run out of most of our Christmas wrap. Why? Oh, that would be because it’s 3 days before Christmas! But don’t get upset at yourself for waiting this long, please, take it out on me because, well, that’s just easier to do now, isn’t it?” Yes, my shifts have become 5-hour long challenges of not letting smart-ass comments out of my mouth. Shawn now has the daily pleasure of hearing all of them when I get home.

But in just a few days it will all be over. Oh, the joy of Christmas!

So, before the holiday rush really starts, Shawn and I had the opportunity to see a national landmark and a Christmas tradition at the same time: the annual production of A Christmas Carol at Ford’s Theatre.

As some of you may have known (and I may have already mentioned), I spent the last two Christmases running wardrobe for the production of A Christmas Carol at Trinity Rep. It was draining, to say the least, but I’ve found that I’m missing it a little this year. So Shawn surprised me by getting tickets to the production here. A slightly different production (no Food Song), but very much the same (a game of Yes and No).

The really cool part was that it was performed at Ford’s Theatre. Only the most famous historical theatre in the country! It’s a really nice theatre, especially considering how old it is. It’s much smaller than today’s theatres, which makes you feel like you’re right there in the action. And then there’s the interesting and slightly creepy fact that while you’re watching the play, you can basically look into the booth where President Lincoln was sitting when we was shot. I know you all know the story, but have you ever wondered exactly how Booth jumped onto the stage after shooting the President? Well, I can tell you now, it really wasn’t that far of a jump. Lincoln was practically part of Our American Cousin. I tried to get a good photo of it, but I was using the phone in my camera, so it doesn’t really do it justice.

So the play….it was really good. I’m a little bit embarrassed to say that even though I’ve seen/heard A Christmas Carol over 100 times, I still tear up a bit at parts. Especially when I’m not busy throwing clothes on somebody. It was really interesting to see how things were done differently with this production - some for better and some for worse. All in all, it was a great evening.
