Weekend adventures

Last weekend was possibly the busiest since we arrived in Nassau, but it was definitely the most fun. On Saturday I went with a group of friends to Jollification, an annual craft and Christmas fair. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but there was some really nice stuff. I’m not sure where these artists and craftspeople are hiding out most of this time. And it seemed like a good potential venue for Witty Designs if I can get my act together and get some designing and sewing done before next year.

After some shopping, those of us that are Twilight fans broke off from the group and headed to the movie theater to catch New Moon. I couldn’t believe how packed it was - apparently Bahamians are big fans of the series, too. We ended up having to go to a later showing than we had planned. But we got there early, so we actually got good seats (as opposed to the people who had to stand at the back of the theater). I need to do an entirely separate post about seeing movies in The Bahamas because it is a cultural experience in itself. But in this case, I think the vocal crowd reactions actually added something to the film. I’m not going to gush about how much I liked it, mostly because I’m kind of embarrassed by how much I did, but it might just find a way into our DVD collection when it comes out.

Then on Sunday, I finally had the opportunity to go out on a boat for the day. There are a few people at the Embassy that live in housing with boat slips and own personal boats. So the trick is to make friends with those people!

Five of us headed out early (okay, it was 10am) Sunday morning. We had a quick stop over a sunken airplane - those that wanted to snorkel did, and the rest of us observed from above - then we headed over and dropped anchor off the beach at Old Fort Bay. It was a great day of sunbathing, swimming, and just hanging out. I even overcame my fears (ie. caved to peer pressure) and jumped off the side of the boat into the water. Any of you familiar with my aversion to deep water will understand what an accomplishment this was for me.

Headed back home. The buildings under the bridge are part of the neighborhood where some of our friends live.

It was an amazing day and hard to believe that it was only 4 days before Thanksgiving. This is my first tropical Christmas, and I’m having a difficult time believing that the holidays are actually going to happen soon, despite the fact that it’s 80 and sunny outside. I guess I’ll put the Christmas tree up this weekend even though it seems a little crazy.
