Don’t even get the Communists started on Rambo…

Today I went to a local high school and spoke about the American Revolution. Schools and organizations in Kyiv regularly reach out to the embassy for guest speakers and this is one I volunteered for as I have an interest in American history.
We went to our first professional soccer football match last night. It was Dynamo Kyiv versus Arsenal all the way from jolly ol’ England. Although I enjoy football, we were mostly going to check out the crazy atmosphere and we weren’t disappointed.
I can’t tell you how happy it makes me that someone found their way to my blog with the Google search “monkey riding weiner dog.” Unfortunately, said person also immediately left the site so apparently what I had to offer wasn’t what they were looking for.
Why must the Russians ruin things for everyone?
I took advantage of a pleasant holiday break from Russian classes to catch a few new films. Most of the Oscar heavyweight contenders usually come out right at the end of the year and I saw at least two, maybe even three, that will be up for some awards.
The watercooler talk among the new Junior Officers and the wannabe Foreign Service Officers out there has recently focused on the newly announced changes to the Foreign Service testing process. Granted, the buzz has probably been quite a bit louder among the wannabe’s because for those of us already in it is more of a “Huh…that’s interesting” kind of thing because we’ve already made it. It is a much bigger deal to those still trying to get in.
I realize I have neglected to discuss my Russian training yet. I’m not really sure what to say. 7:40 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day. All Russian, all the time. I think I’m progressing well, yet feel like I can’t saything. How can that be?
It’s funny how you can get caught up with the funny stories of people you don’t even really know. There has long been a story floating around in the FS blog world started by Dakota of Face the Sun about his claims of once seeing a monkey riding a weiner dog. It was, of course, met with derision and disbelief by everyone else because although Dakota claimed to have a photograph of this unnatural alliance, he was slow to produce it. After months of waiting the photo was produced and crow was eaten. Now, Phil from Life on the Mekong has the unfortunate conclusion to the story.
I have to admit that lately I’ve been obsessed with tracking every little detail of my blog since I joined Google Analytics. As we all know, Google knows all and through this program they’ve decided to share a little of their knowledge. I can now track not only how many unique hits and page views I receive on a daily basis, but also where exactly on the page people click, what keywords are entered into a search engine that lead to my site, what links people click on to leave the site, and all sorts of other technical stuff that I don’t understand. Today I noticed what I consider my most fascinating find.
