I went and promised more regular entries and then proceeded to go silent for several days. I’m kind of a jerk that way. I had a good reason though. I went out of town to do a little traveling with the wife and her visiting parents. We decided to go to Crimea.

We took our first trip outside of Kyiv this past weekend. We were on a trip sponsored by the Community Liaison Office (in charge of the general morale and welfare of embassy employees and their families.) Chernihiv is less than two hours to the north of Kyiv near the border with Belarus. We had an English-speaking guide and, all in all, a good day.
We decided to spend one of our precious few remaining weekends in the States exploring someplace that has somehow eluded us until now: New York City. I was going to write a long-winded and probably boring recap of our adventures, but, luckily for me, my better half created something much better and with pictures. Check it out here. However, if you’re too lazy to go there, I can sum up the entire trip in three magical words: Tony Frickin’ Danza.
The story today coming out of Athens helps me remember that you never know exactly which are the “dangerous” posts to work at. The U.S. Embassy in Athens was struck today by a rocket-propelled grenade. Fortunately, no one was injured in the attack.
